The North Atlantic Route Before December 1915

Prior to December 1915, mail services from Sweden to America had operated via Norway, Denmark,
                                                   Germany or Holland.

From 1872 the fastest route would have been via the Helsingborg - Helsingm ferry, and from 1895 via
the Malm0 - K0benhavn ferry, through Denmark to Hamburg for the Hamburg American Line which had
commenced operations in 1848. With the opening in 1897 of the Trelleborg (Sweden) to Sassnitz
(Germany) ferry a more direct route to Hamburg was possible. From 1898 the Scandinavian American
Line started operations from K0benhavn providing an alternative crossing.
