MS Gripsholm (1925)
In the early 1920s Gilbert Morgan Morris, a self-employed photographer, had set up the Marine Photo
service (MPS), placing photographers with a darkroom on the major liners, including those of the SAL.
The item here, addressed from London
on 8 March 1939, and marked urgent
was sent to the official photographer
on board the Gripsholm at Bahia Brazil
during its 1939 Winter Cruise.
From the 3/6 rate it would have
been part of a parcel containing
photographic material.
Following this cruise, the Gripsholm continued to operate until 24 November 1939, when it made its final
sailing from Goteborg.
She was then laid up until chartered by the US Department of State during the second world war.
