MS Kungsholm (1928)
With the return in 1924 of the Kungsholm leased from the Holland America Line, the Sal had
commissioned the Gripsholm and by 1928 was operating three liners, the others being the Drottningholm
and the Stockholm. The latter was ageing and did not fit into the growing cruise trade. A purpose-built
new ship, the second with the name Kungsholm was commissioned to replace the Stockholm which was
sold in 1928.
It departed from Goteborg for New York on 24 November 1928. This was the first occasion that a post
office operated on a Swedish ship
Posted from Stockholm on 23 November 1928 at the 15 ore rat. It was then placed on board the
Kungsholm with 45 ore additional postage applied on board the ship's post office for carriage on the ship
to the USA and obliterated with the new SJP 7 (sea post 7) hand-stamp on its first day of use. The ship's
cachet and a separate cachet for the maiden voyage were applied.
On arrival in New York it was redirected to Philadelphia, receiving a Grand Cent[ral] Sta[tion] machine
cancel on the reverse of 3 December before onward transmission.
