Mercy Ships - Drottningholm
The final successful exchange of the second world war took place at Goteborg in March 1945. This was a
unique event as the vessel was chartered by the German government. The primary aim was to sail to
Istanbul to recover German diplomats. The exchange began on 8 March with 246 Britons from internment
camps in Germany and other nationalities. It called first at Liverpool to disembark the British, in Portugal
for the Argentines and Portuguese, and then moved on to Port Said (early in April) and Istanbul. After
staying in Istanbul for three week, the Drottningholm then returned to Sweden via Lisbon and Holyhead,
arriving on 5 June.
This postcard was sent from Port Said on 5 April 1945 (when the Drottningholm was in transit) to London
where it received a date-stamp of 27 April before being redirected to its final address in the city of
London.
