On the night of 1 August 1291, representatives from the three central cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, met on the Rütli
st
meadow overlooking Lake Lucerne, and swore an oath of allegiance: to rid their lands of the Habsburg’s and declare independence.
The Chapel in the Hohle Gasse (hollow lane) on Lake Lucerne, was erected on the spot where Wilhelm Tell is said to have lain in wait
to slay the tyrannical Governor, Hermann Gessler.
