TYPE VIII 1st recut
This was the second of two sideways duplexes issued to this office. The first was a Type II hand stamp issued in 1855.
This was the only Type VIII hand stamp issued to Ramsgate but was recut twice. This 1st recut was issued on
8th June 1859. This Type VIII hand stamp has scarcity rating ofB common. It is recorded used between
30 h June 1859 and 22nd October 1860.

Above is a fine strike of this hand stamp seen on a pair of 4d surface printed stamps posted to the U.S.A.
You will see that the first strike the obliterator has cancelled the 4d stamp and the date stamp has fallen on the first
stamp. A second strike has been struck over the C.D.S. to ensure the obliterator has struck the stamp as per P.O. rules,
the C.D.S. is on the envelope to identify the office of posting. It is dated 21July1859 and shows the code letter C.
The hand stamp was again recut in 1860 for the last time. The only other code recorded used is A.
