ISLE OF MAN

                                                          TYPE VIII
This was the only sideways duplex given to this office and it was issued on the 17th October 1857. It is one of the
rarest of the sideways duplexes with a scarcity rating of G. Tt is recorded used between 27th November 1857 and
Iih July 1860. ·with nearly 3 years of recorded use it is surprising perhaps that more examples have not been seen.

Above you can see an example of this rare sideways duplex from tile Isle_ of Man. It is seen on a 6d surface printed
                                                                             1
stamp paying the postage to Tasmariia in Australia aricfis -dated·t~i ~0dober i'858" and shows the code Jetter A
In the 20 plus years I have been collecting the sideways duplex this is the first Isle of Man sideways duplex cancel I
have seen on a surface printed stamp. It is endorsed at top right per 1st Mail not sure if that reefer's to the 1st mail shi1
or the 1st dispatch from the post office I suspect it the first mail ship. It has a Liverpool C.D.S. dated 19th October
where it would have gone from the I.O.M. then a London C.D.S. dated 20th October and where it would have travelle<
to Australia. There is a very poor red triangle across flap which is unreadable which I think is the arrival mark.
