WELLINGTON SOM
                                                             TYPE II

This was the only sideways duplex to be issued to this town. It was issued on the 1 ih August 185 5.
It was not recut. It has a scarcity rating of C average scarcity.

Above you can see the most amazing small illustrated envelope of a man sitting on his horse.
There are of course many illustrated envelopes done over the years of Queen Victoria's reign.
I have been collecting the sideways duplex for over 25 years and this is the first example I have seen,
of a coloured hand drawn illustrated envelope using the sideways duplex to cancel the postage stamp.
It is seen on a ld red plate number 124 and is dated 12th October 1869 and shows the code letter D.
This is a late use of a sideways duplex although this town has been recorded using it up until 1871.
In 16 years of use this hand stamp was not recut. During this time I have recorded the code
letters B to D used with this hand stamp.
