Catherine, who served as Liberal Member of Parliament for Leeds West from 1885 to 1910, and as Home Secretary
= 1905 to 1910. Appointed as the first Governor-General of the new Union of South Africa in May 1910, holding this
office as Viscount Gladstone until September 1914.
