William Gladstone, later Liberal. Prime Minister
Written in June 1864 when William Gladstone was Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Liberal government,
this cover, which has been somewhat uncared for through the many years, was written to Thomas llankey,
Member of Parliament for Peterborough, and sent to his London address in Portland Place.

To ensure Official Paid postage, as later denoted, the writer has signed his name in the lower left comer.
An area receiving mark was placed on the reverse on the same ~ay as despatch.
