Occasionally non-Finnish maritime postmarks are applied to mail posted on ships
visiting Finnish ports. Usually these mails do not pass through the Finnish postal
system.
Cover to the United States posted on the destroyer U.S.S. Conyngham on her visit to
Helsinki in 1937 during her maiden voyage to ports in northern Europe. The large
commemorative postmark was applied on board.

The U.S.S. Conyngham 1,500 tons, was launched in 1934, she survived the Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941 and served in the Pacific throughout World War 2.
She was decommissioned in December 1945 and used as a target ship in the Bikini
atomic bomb tests in 1946.
