The S/S J. L. Runeberg was a small coastal steam ship which was used as a tourist
attraction. It was moored in the South Harbour in Helsinki. It was used for sea trips
to Porvoo (Borga) a small coastal town 50 km. east of Helsinki and the home of J.L.
Runeberg the national poet of Finland (died 1877).
The cover is one of many prepared by a Helsinki stamp dealer and sold during the
1956 Finlandia Stamp Exhibition. The postmark and the printed inscription on the
stamp selvage were never approved by the Finnish Postoffice. The stamp is genuine
and commemorates the exhibition.
