During the ice free months of the year a system of lake steam ships operate on the
extensive lake and river systems of central and eastern Finland, connecting many
remote rural communities. Mail can be posted on these ships and on arrival it
receives a distinctive maritime postmark. 'Laivapostia' is the Finnish for ship mail.

Cover posted on a lake steamer sailing between Savonlinna and Kuopio in eastern
Finland. The postcard shows the S.S. Kallavesi a typical lake steamer operating on
the route.
