MS Gripsholm (1925)
The 1935 Winter Cruise started in Goteborg on 16 February. Once again a special postmark was
produced, this time with a picture of the Pyramids in the design. As for the previous Winter Cruises, the
SAL produced a postcard showing the scheduled route.
This time, however, all did not go to plan. Unrest in Greece, which eventually led to a coup d'etat on
1 March 193 5, forced the SAL to revise its plans for the cruise to miss out Athens and Istanbul. To
compensate for this, additional stops were arranged at Beyrut and Messina with a second brief stop at
Malta. By doing this, the arrangements for stopping at other ports were unchanged and the passengers
were able to reach the Pyramids.
Original route (as shown on the map card): Goteborg - K0benhavn - Southampton - Gibraltar -
Villfranche - Naples - Bizerte - Malta - Alexandria - Haifa - Cyprus - Rhodes - Istanbul - Athens -
Syracuse - Villefranche - Palma - Malaga - Southampton - Goteborg
Revised route: Goteborg - K0benhavn - Southampton - Gibraltar - Villefranche - Naples - Bizerte -
Malta - Alexandria - Haifa - Beyrut - Cyprus - Rhodes - Malta - Syracuse - Messina - Villefranche -
Palma - Malaga - Southampton - Goteborg
The Captain for the cruise was Harry Gunnar Nordenson.
The postal clerk for the post office was Conrad Nilsson.
The envelope below was posted on board on the first stage from Goteborg to K0benhavn on 16 February
1935. It is addressed to Birgit Soderberg, Uno Soderberg's daughter. Note that the postmark refers to to
M/F (Motor Fartyg - Swedish) while the cachet refers to MJS (Motor Ship)
