MS Stockholm (1948)
The first Stockholm had been sold in 1928, leaving the ageing Drottningholm and the new Kungsholm
and Gripsholm. The SAL had commissioned a replacement Stockholm in 1938 but this was destroyed by
fire before its launch. A second replacement was ordered and completed in 1940 but not delivered.
Following the second world war, the Kungsholm was not brought back into service and the
Drottningholm was put up for sale. A further Stockholm was commissioned and started service from
Goteborg to New York on 21 February 1948 after some delay. February is not the ideal month to cross the
Atlantic and the Stockholm encountered heavy seas, resulting in the death of one passenger.
The SAL produced a postcard for the maiden voyage.
This example has the SJP 7 date-stamp of21 February and separate cachet.
