SIDEWAYS EXPERIMENTAL DUPLEX
TYPE I
The Type I hand stamp along with 5 Type II were the first sideways duplexes to be issued. They were issued on
30th May 1854. There were two Type I hand stamps identified as a and b. Type Ia has a round date stamp and the
Type lb has an oval date stamp. Both types have the numeral facing the date stamp.

This hand stamp was recut twice. The first recut being issued on 21st May 1855 and the second
was issued on 27th November 1856.

An example of this Type Ia hand stamp is seen above dated 9th June 1854 which is the earliest recorded date.
It is cancelling a 2d blue imperf postage stamp the only example of a 2d blue I have seen cancelling a
sideways duplex.
