LEEDS TYPE Ia

                                                       TYPE A original
There were two Type Ia and one Type III sideways duplex issued to this town the Type Ia on lih June 1854. The
Type III in July 1857. Both the Type Ia hand stamps were recut in 1857. They have a scarcity rating of a common.

Here is an example of this hand stamp it is dated the 15th June 1855 and as you can see there is a flat at the bottom of
the C.D.S. This appeared to have occurred sometime after September 1854. Note that the stamp has been placed in
the bottom left of the envelope contrary to regulations. You can also see that the hand stamp has been struck upside
down, this likely occurred because the Clerk would have turned the envelope so the stamp was in right hand corner
ensuring it was ready to be cancelled with the handstamp without any delay.
                                                         TYPE A recut
This recut hand stamp was issued on the 6th March 1857 and remained in use for less than a year.

This is an example of the above recut dated 15th July 1857 you can see that the flat at the bottom of the C.D.S. has
mostly disappeared after the recutting. As the recut was in use for a relatively short time it is scarcer than the original
