SHEFFIELD TYPE Ia

                                                      TYPE B original
This was the second of the two Type I hand stamps and it was issued on 15th June 1855.

Here is rather a nice example of this hand stamp on a ld P.S.E. dated 4th July 1855 showing the code letter C.
The Type A hand stamp is recorded used between June 1854 and May 185 5 so it is possible that this
hand stamp replaced the Type A stamp as this Type B hand stamp was not issued until June 1855.
                                                        TYPE B recut
This is a recut of the above hand stamp and it was issued on the 2nd October 1855.

                                                              - -~--··-

The above envelope is a bit of a puzzle to me it has a 6d embossed postage stamp and has been posted to Kendal.
A 6d internal rate is unusual unless it pays a registration fee of 6d there is no indication on the envelope that this is
the case. You can also see that it has written on it above the address Receipts, Securities and cash of£ 1 19s 6d.
This would suggest it should have been registered or compulsory registered if the P.O. realized it had cash in it.
Either there should be a ld stamp paying the postage or this with enclosures was a heavy letter making it a 6d rate.
