3          AREAS OF APPLICATION



                     Reply cards saw many areas of application.


           PRIVATE CORRESPONDENCE
           Reply cards were frequently used for private correspondence. Typical means of usage cover correspondence of
           traveller, where the paid reply allowed a carefree return of the answer, between regular correspondents, where the
           paid reply was a courtesy to the receiver, or among family members between the old home and the new homeland
           abroad, making reply cards an observer of continuing globalization.

                    Reply card of the French colony Diego Suarez on the Northern tip of the Madagascar island.
             The card was used back 1898 from India – at a time where Diego Suarez already was incorporated into the
                                           Madagascar administration since 1896.
           As in all areas of Eastern and Southern Africa, a significant group of emigrants of Indian ancestry populated the
                                                          island.
