MS Gripsholm (1925)
The Gripsholm was the first liner purpose-built for the SAL. The builders, Armstrong Whitwoth & Co of
Newcastle, launched the ship on 26 November 1924 and delivered it to the SAL on 7 November 1925. On
that day the company officially changed its name to AB Svenska Amerika Linjen.
The first official postcard was produced in advance
of the delivery of the Gripsholm. This example was
used from Goteborg on 19 October 1925.
As with the Drottningholm and the Kungsholm, no special arrangements were made to celebrate the
maiden voyage (on 21November1925). There was no post office on board until November 1928.
A further copy of the postcard is shown dated 7 August 1926 advising the Andersson family in Tidersrum
(Sweden) of the arrival of the Gripsholm in New York. It was posted from the SAL offices in Goteborg on
7 August and arrived in Tidersrum on 9 August.
