MS Gripsholm (1925)
The Gripsholm was built both for the Atlantic trade and for cruising. The first cruise was to the
Mediterranean starting from Goteborg on 1 February 1927.
Postcard (with a view of the Sidi-Mahrez Mosque in Tunis) written on board
the Gripsholm between Tunis and Alexandria on 14 February 1927 on its first
cruise. With no post office on board, it has an Egyptian stamp cancelled at
Alexandria on 15 February 1927.

Accommodation on board was sumptuous, especially for first class passengers and confirmed the
popularity of the SAL with both Swedes and Swedish Americans for cruising and for emigrants to the
USA wanting to revisit Sweden. The SAL produced a series of postcards illustrating the facilities on
board . Shown here is the gymnasium reserved for first class passengers.
