This was the second of the two sideways duplexes to be issued to this town. It was issued on 25-05-57.
Above you see a most interesting envelope showing a fine example of this date stamp dated 3rd July 1857. You will
see that originally this envelope was sent from Gosport and cancelled by their sideways duplex dated 30th June 1857.
It was addressed to Bradford where it was then redirected to Bedford. When the ld redirection fee was paid the stamp
was stuck over the original stamp. On the back are two U.D. C. Alverstone in green over struck by a Manchester Rd
U.D.C. A second example shows this hand stamp dated 29th September 1858 on a pair of 4d stamps paying the
postage to Amsterdam in Holland. Both the above examples show the code letter 'I'.
