Page 76 - The Sideways Experimenatal Duplex 1852-1858
P. 76
WEYMOUTH
TYPE III original
This was the second of two different types of sideways duplex issued to this town. The first a Type II issued in
June 1854 and this Type III which was issued on 16th May 1857 and it was recutDecember 1858.
Above are two rather nice examples of this hand stamp. The first is seen on a 4d surface printed stamp paying the
postage to France and dated 16th September 1857 and showing the code letter C. The second example also has a rate
of 4d this time though it is paid by two pairs of 1 d stars on a likely cut down front paying a heavy letter internal rate.
This is dated 2ih August 1858 and also shows the code letter C. This hand stamp was recut in December 1858.
The codes I have recorded used are A to D and C inverted and no code letter at all.
