This town had two types of sideways duplex issue to them the first was a Type II issued in 1855 and this Type Va
hand stamp. This hand stamp was issued on the 3rd September 1857, there were no recuts.
It has been recorded used between 7th September 1857 and the 4th November 1861.

Here you can see two fine examples of this hand stamp, the first is on a registered letter to London with a 6d surface
printed stamp paying the registration fee and a 1 d red paying the postage. It is dated 9th December 1857 and shows
the code letter 'A'. The second example is seen on an envelope to the U.S.A. with a cut to shape lOd embossed stam1
and two 1 red stamps paying the 1/- rate. It is dated 27th May 1859 and also shows the code letter 'A'.
I have recorded only one other code letter used with this hand stamp and that is code letter 'B'.
