P. 77
BRIGHTON TYPE IV
TYPEA3
This town was issued with two of this Type IV hand stamps the second with the numeral 4 in C.D.S.
Both of these hand stamps were issued on the same day 23rd February 1857.
Above is an example I believe of this A3 hand stamp but it is not certain as the numeral has not been clearly struck.
It has been struck on the Id P.S.E. addressed to London. On arrival in London a Id red stamp has been added, which
has covered part of the sideways duplex, to redirect the letter to Homsey North London.
TYPEA4
This was the second of the two hammers issued to this town on 23rd February 1857.

Above you will see an example of this hand stamp on a 1/- surfaced printed postage stamp paying the postage to
U.S.A. It is dated 13th August 1857 and shows the code C4, also on the front is a PAID and a 5 cents in red.
