TYPE Va
This has a small single arc with the numeral facing away from the date stamp. There were two sub-types to
the Type V hand stamp a and b. Type Va first being issued in July 1857.
CARDIFF
This type has the date, the year in full and a code, in that order. A total of 9 offices received this style hand stamp.
Above can be seen an example of this hand stamp on a registered letter to Trieste with the scarce London crown
registered mark. It is dated 16 September 1857 and has the code 'E'. Rarity rating is C.
TAUNTON
The Type V stamps were normally struck in black ink. This town however was the only one to use a coloured ink.
An example of this stamp can be seen above using a blue ink. It is dated 20th January 1858 and has the code 'E'.
fu the normal black ink this stamp has a rarity rating of B but in a blue ink this increases to F.
