6. THE SEARCH FOR ALTERNATIVES TO THE DOUBLE CARD WITH PREPAID REPLY

THE 1895 EL SALVADOR REPLY LETTER CARD ISSUE
In 1888 Argentina issued the first letter card with attached reply part. This combination soon became very
popular and was adopted by many countries, primarily in South America and in some European countries. In
1895 the small Republic of El Salvador issued a letter card with paid reply for international use. The card is part
of the «Seebeck» issues, still it is an official issue. There were no provisions for such an issue and therefor the El
Salvador letter card was not according the UPU regulations.

Reply side of the 1895 El Salvador
                                                                                  letter card (unused)

The full El Salvador card with
                                                                                 both question and reply card
                                                                                 (reduced copy)

This lettercard is a milestone in the history of the search for
reply card alternatives. Unfortunately, today only one used
example of the reply part is known, used back from London
and part of David G. Chiong’s collection of El Salvador postal
stationery. Here the lettercard is shown exceptionally in unused
           form.
