5.2 ERRORS, MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND MISUSES –BYPOSTAL AGENCIES

INCORRECT NON‐ACCEPTANCE OF FOREIGN FRANKING AND ERRONEOUS TAX MARKINGS
Again and again the foreign stamps and incipia led to misunderstandings and to unjustified complaints, both in
the country of mailing – where the stamp was obviously international – and in the receiving country, where the
domestic stamp was not considered good for franking of a postcard posted abroad.

Chinese reply card returned from Hong Kong.
The card was cancelled with a Hong Kong postmark in sure distance to the incipium and received a tax marking
to show that the franking was not considered valid for postage.

Austrian reply card with an inflation period franking of 900 Kronen (international postcard rate from
01.11.1922 ‐ 31.07.1923). The card was returned from France where the stamps were marked invalid with
                                                          «0»s.
