5.1 ERRORS, MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND MISUSES –BYTHE POSTAL CUSTOMER

LACK OF IDENTIFICATION AS REPLY CARD
UPU regulations required all reply cards to show a respective inscription in French language. If an uprated
domestic card was used, such inscriptions could be added by hand. These markings in French were often forgotten
by postal customers.

German domestic at 5 Pfennig reply card, correctly uprated with a 5 Pfennig adhesive stamp. The card did not
receive any additional inscription in French language and was returned without objection from Turkey in 1914.

Austrian domestic reply card uprated with an adhesive stamp to cover the full postcard fee for the return from
Switzerland to Austria. A very special case, the card does not even bear the word «reply» – «Antwort» in
German language –, but just the roman digit «II». The practise of such a limited indication was common for
Austrian postal stationery double cards in the 1910s and 1920s and certainly is confusing.
