5.2 ERRORS, MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND MISUSES –BYPOSTAL AGENCIES

INCORRECT NON‐ACCEPTANCE OF FOREIGN FRANKING AND ERRONEOUS TAX MARKINGS

A rather interesting piece is the reply card mailed 1967 shown above. The UK card was correctly prepaid at 4d
but the stamps were marked as invalid in its origin at Spain. The card again received a CDS not cancelling the
stamps and a tax marking. In the UK the card received an extra marking «Stamp not valid where posted – to
pay 6d», which is equivalent to 1.5 times the presumed lacking postage.

Reply card with a 4 pence stamp from the 1st series of stamps of Island of Jersey returned from London CDS
12.12.1969 bearing a manuscript marking «stamp not valid» and a tax markings «8 [pence] TO PAY liable to
letter rate» and postage due stamps for 8 pence. The 1st Jersey stamps where issued on 01.10.1969, Jersey
was considered UPU member via the United Kingdom.
