John Campbell Colquhoun MP at CbartwelB
John Colquhoun (1803-70) writes from his home at Chartwell in Kent, many years later the home
of Sir Winston Churchill. John Colquhoun bought the site in 1848 and it was he who named it as
Chartwell for the first time, using the house and grounds as both occupier and landlord. His political
career was intermittent as a radical, and later as a Conservative, during the period 1832 to 1847.
