At the 1923 election the Conservatives lost their majority, and when they lost a vote of confidence in the House in
January 1924, King George V called on MacDonald to form a minority Labour government, with the tacit support of the
Liberals under Asquith from the corner benches. MacDonald thus became the first Labour Prime Minister, the first from
a working-class background and one of the very few without a university education. The Government was only to last
nine months and did not have a majority in either the Commons or the Lords, nevertheless it was still able to support
the unemployed with the extension of benefits and amendments to the Insurance Acts.
