This was the first of two sideways duplexes to be issued to this town, it was issued on the 25 h September 185 5.

A Type VIII hand stamp was issued in October 1857.

Above you can see an example of this hand stamp on a lovely 1/- embossed stamp paying the postage to the U.S.A.
and dated 26th April 1856 and showing the code letter D. Note that the stamp has been put in the middle on the right
maybe to avoid covering up the recipient's name. Code letters recorded used in this hand stamp are C,D,E and F.
TYPE II recut
This hand stamp was recut from the above hand stamp and issued on the l3 h November 1857.

Above you can see an example of this hand stamp on Id red paying the inland rate and date 18th October 1858.
I have recorded only two codes used with this stamp D and E but then I have not seen many examples of this recut.
