TYPE II
A few of this type were also issued on the 30th May 1854 the first day of issue for the sideways duplex. The date
stamps varied from 23 to 27mm in diameter with the town name at the side and the obliterator facing away from
the date stamp. There were a total of 138 offices that received this style hand stamp between 1854-1857.
Some towns received more than one hand stamp and on some occasions with a different diameter date stamp.
Of all of the sideways duplex issued this was the only town that received one with the incorrect numeral.

DEVONPORT 620
This was the first of the two hand stamps and was issued on 12th June 1854 with the
incorrect numeral of 620 whlch at the time was the numeral for Portsmouth.

Above is a strike dated 14th February 1855 on an envelope with the code 'D'. Though this hand stamp was issued
with the incorrect numeral no attempt was made to withdraw it from use and it remained in use until 1857.

DEVONPORT 250

A hand stamp with the correct numeral 250 was issued on 20th July 1856. Both have the same rarity rating of E.

The envelope above shows the correct numeral and is dated 10th November 1856 showing the code 'D'.
This hand stamp also remained in use until 1857 both these hand stamps are very scarce.
