PORTSMOUTH TYPE II

                                                      TYPEBRECUT
This was recut from the above hand stamp then issued on the 6th August 1857. It is recorded used between the
21st August 1857 and 1st February 1858. It appears to be more common than the original hand stamp.

Above you can see two examples of this hand stamp both with Id reds. The first is seen posted to London and is dated tl
24th September 1857 and shows the code letter E. The second examples has tWo ld reds the one on the left I think is the
1 d fee for a late letter if it was for a letter of over 1/2oz the stamp should be on the right hand side of the letter. It is
interesting to note that the 1 d paying the postage is a perf 16 which was only in use for a short while the other 1 d is a
Perf 14 which is the normal perforation for the ld red stamp. It was posted to Enfield and is dated the 1st February 185:
which is so far the latest recorded date for this hand stamp. It is showing the code letter C.
