BURNLEY

                                                     TYPE II blue ink
This town received just one hand stamp which was issued on the 17th August 185 5. In nearly 30 years I have
recorded only one example of this hand stamp cancelled in blue ink.

Here you can see the only recorded example of this town struck in blue ink. It is dated 9th July 1856 and showing the
code letter "B". The reason for the use of blue ink I can only guess at, I think that it was used in error as black ink
was the P.O. regulations at this time.
                                                    TYPE II black ink

This was the colour of inl< that the Post Office insisted on. This town in black ink has a scarcity value of "D"

Here is a.ri example of this hand stamp in black ink posted to Accrington. It is dated 16th September 1857 and has the
code letter "C". The hand stamp remained in use until 1858 and code letters A to E have been recorded used.
