4.3 REGULATIONS AND PRACTICES –COMMON NON-UPU REGULATED PRACTICES

LACK OF PROOF OF THE INITIAL MAILING OF THE DOUBLE CARD –POSTED VIA LETTERBOX
If the reply part was posted through a letterbox instead of handled via the post office counter, it was impossible
to proof, if the reply card has been initially mailed attached to a question post. Posting straight through a
letterbox was often not permitted or at least not welcome. To mark this, in some countries reply cards posted via
letterbox received a specific marking to indicate so.

Belgian reply card posted for return from Coblenz 15.04.1894 with the German marking «Aus dem Briefkasten» ‐
                                                   «Posted via letterbox».
By mistake it was cancelled at the initial mailing in Ostende 12.10.1894.

German reply card posted via letterbox in Belgium 1898. The card shows a respective dual language marking in
French «Trouve a la boite» and Flemish as well as (most likely) an incoming postmark dated a day before the return
                                                         mailing.
Only a few such markings are known on international reply cards
