LONDON S.E.9
                                                    TYPE Vlb RECUT

This was recut from the original hand stamp then issued on 14th January 1861. It is recorded used between the
5th February 1861 and 29th October 1862. It has a scarcity rating ofD as do all of the London sideways duplexes.

Above you will see two examples of this hand stamp. The first example has been struck twice on a 1 d postal
stationery envelope. Maybe the Clerk felt that the C.D.S. was not clear enough on the embossed 1d so struck only the
date stamp below to be sure to identify the office of posting. It is dated the 5th February 1861 and shows the letter
code X. The second example was posted in Brighton and has a Brighton Type B 1 2nd recut sideways duplex on the
front dated the 10th August 1861 and was sent to London E.C. For some reason it appears to have first been received
in S.E. where the above hand stamp was struck on the reverse. It is dated 1 oth August 1861 and also shows the code
letter X. It must have then been passed over to the E.C. where a red C.D.S. was added dated the same date.
